On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh left New York City alone in his Ryan NYP, called the Spirit of St. Louis. More than 30 hours later, he landed at Le Bourget Field, near Paris, to an enthusiastic crowd of 100,000, completing the first solo crossing of the Atlantic ever. The Spirit of St. Louis retired less than a year later and has been greeting visitors to the Smithsonian since 1928.
