The federal government formed the Tuskegee Airmen as an experiment to see if black men could fly. The answer was a resounding yes. Tuskegee Airmen flew almost 1,600 missions in World War II and shot down 112 enemy aircraft. The Airmen were known for flying P-51D Mustangs with a red stripe on the back, earning them the nickname “Red Tails.” After the war, the Airmen fought a different battle, one against racism at home.
