On Oct. 23, 1951, 56 Soviet MiG-21 fighter jets intercepted an American bombing raid over North Korea. The Americans flew nine B-29s, escorted by 89 fighter jets. The numerical advantage was of no help to the Americans. The MiGs still shot down six bombers and damaged two more. No plane was more feared in the Korean war than the lightning fast Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21.
