The Learjet 40 was released in 2002 as a replacement for the retiring Learjet 31. The LJ40 has a 36% larger cabin and 35% longer range than the LJ31 at only a 10% higher purchase price.
The LJ40 is also a smaller, more economical option for short range flights than the Learjet 45. Although the Learjet 40 has the same engines, cockpit, and systems as the LJ45, the main difference is the fuselage length. At 55 feet 6 inches long, the LJ40 is 24.5” shorter than the Learjet 45.
