The Lockheed L-188 Electra was the only large turboprop airliner ever built in the United States. Commercial service began in 1959, and the early Electras had some serious problems with an engine mount that resulted in two crashes. Lockheed fixed the problem, but the plane never regained public confidence. Lockheed built only about 170 between 1957 and 1961.
