The Grumman HU-16 Albatross' primary role was search-and-rescue. The Albatross served both the Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars and had a reputation as a durable, seaworthy plane. Rough water just wasn't a problem for the Albatross. In Korea, the plane rescued almost 1,000 stranded UN personnel, many of them behind enemy lines. The Navy and Coast Guard also adopted the plane.
