Based on the original Boeing 707, the first of 68 E-3s was delivered in 1977. The aircraft has gone through several upgrades to mission systems, avionics, and engines, but like the B-52, is still using the original Boeing airframe, making some aircraft more than 40 years old. It may remain in service until 2035. The key visual feature of the aircraft is the rotating radar dome mounted on pylons atop the fuselage aft of the wings. The crew includes 2 pilots, a navigator, and a flight engineer and a mission crew of up to 19 people. Interesting fact: During Operation Desert Strom, E-3s flew 379 missions, accumulating more than 5,000 hours of on-station time.
