Initially designed by the Vertol company and produced by Boeing company, the twin-rotor CH-47D is the United States' largest heavy-lift helicopter. In production since 1962, more than 1200 have been delivered and it is still in production. Later versions have more powerful engines rated at more than 4,700 horsepower, each. It has a crew of three, two pilots and the loadmaster and it can carry up to 55 troops or a payload of 24,000 lb. It can travel 450 miles at a speed of 196 mph. It has a rear loading ramp for vehicles. Interesting fact: The CH-47D can hover with its front wheels beyond the edge of a cliff and it rear wheels on the ground to offload vehicles and troops.
