Over the skies of Normandy on June 6, 1944, Douglas C-47A Skytrains filled the air, dropping American paratroopers to secure key positions before the D-Day invasion. Nicknamed "Gooney Bird," the Skytrain is the military version of the legendary DC-3 airliner. Every branch of the military and most major allied powers flew the Skytrain and the aircraft served on every continent and in every major battle. Douglas built 10,000 of them for the war. After the war it played a critical role in the Berlin Airlift.
