The eight-engine Boeing B-52 was introduced in 1952 and entered service in 1955. It continues to be a key asset for US strategic defense, capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional weapons. Originally, 744 aircraft were built, with production ending in 1962. The active fleet has undergone several modifications for life extension or new more efficient engines, weapons systems, and improved avionics. It is likely that the aircraft will be in service late into the 2040s. As of this 2020, there are 58 in active service, 18 in reserve, and 12 more in storage. Interesting fact: A B-52 was modified to serve as the mother ship to launch the X-15 supersonic research aircraft.
