The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft designed and built by McDonnell Douglas. After initial development problems, the aircraft met all requirements and was placed in service 1995. In 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. Boeing continued to produce C-17s for export markets as well as an additional 15 for the Air Force. A total of 279 C-17s were produced by 2015. The aircraft has a wingspan of nearly 170 feet and is 55 feet tall at the top of the tail. The maximum takeoff weight is 585,000 lb. (392 tons). Interesting fact: The aircraft may also be used to transport the Presidential limousine for long-distance trips.
